After a long shift, she always ends up here. Shoes off, sand between her toes, the tide coming in slow on her left while Port Amber lights up behind her. Sophie walks this stretch of beach the way other people make tea, automatically, instinctively, because it's the thing that brings her back to herself. The gold bangles catch the last of the light. The sea does the rest.
